First introduced by then coach Peter Ferguson at the beginning of the 1999-2000 season, the Neil Coad Medal was designed to be an award selected by the players on a week to week basis.
At the end of each day's play, all first grade players were required to anonymously vote for their player of the day. The only rule being is that players cannot vote for themselves.
Prior to the 2003-2004 season, the voting system was amended to a 3-2-1 basis. Players were asked to vote for their players of the game, awarding three, two and one votes at the end of each match, instead of at the end of each days play. This system was designed to take the advantage away from players who batted and bowled regularly, as opposed to those who just batted or bowled.
At the end of the season the votes are tallied and the player with the most votes is awarded the “Neil Coad Medal”.
The award was named after Neil Coad after he announced his retirement at the end of the 1999-2000 season after the club’s first major premiership in 22 seasons…..The following season he made a comeback to be a joint winner of his own medal!
